As entrepreneurs, setting goals is one of the most important things that any one of us can do to grow our businesses. Yet, it is something that people don’t take the time to do. Goal setting must go beyond simply establishing what you want to accomplish in business, but they must encompass what you want to accomplish in life.
One of the reasons why people decide to become an entrepreneur is to have the freedom of time, yet most end up creating a job for themselves and ultimately never living the lifestyle of their choosing. Think about how many people you know that work in the corporate world who have many dreams and desires in life, yet they can only accomplish so many due to limited time, or financial resources. Do you want to follow down that path while working for yourself?
Start With The End In Mind
To effectively set goals that you can accomplish you need to start with what do you want your ideal lifestyle to look like. Do you want to take 30 days of vacation each year? Or do you want to send your children to the best schools in the area? Maybe you want to learn how to cook without involving the local Fire Department. Whatever it is, you need to establish these goals first.
When you identify your destination, you will know up front what kind of resources do you need to create in your life. Let’s say for example, you wanted to take a cruise somewhere in the world once every 3 months. Besides creating the financial resources to enjoy the cruise, you have to look beyond the goal itself. What systems do you need to create in your business so it doesn’t slow down or shut down while you are gone. Can you create systems that will allow for income to be generated while you are gone. Will all the customer service issues be handled if you are not present?
Every goal that you create ultimately should look like a mind map with the resources that are required to make it happen. Utilizing a mind map in this way will help you see what all is required for your goals so you may achieve them faster.
As entrepreneurs it is easy to end up working alone on many goals and projects. While this can be advantageous for some, it can be detrimental for others as many people need someone to help them stay on track. The fastest way to hit your goals consistently is to have an accountability partner or group. This individual/group focuses on helping each other stay on track and accomplish their goals. It’s no different than having a workout partner at your local gym. Because that person will be there at the crack of dawn to workout with you, you are more compelled to make sure you are there as you do not want to let someone down. The same is true with your business. When someone is there to help you along the way, you will work harder to ensure that you are achieving your goals.
