Leading by example should be something that is fairly straight forward and simple, but sadly it is not. How many times when you were growing up did you hear the expression “Do as I say, not as I do”? If this was a basis in forming your leadership style, it is time to change, because we live in a world where the people we lead watch our actions and will mirror them. Do you want people to follow you because you inspire them to greatness, or do you want them to go the other direction because you are not an effective leader? You must make the choice to succeed at leadership.
Without taking proactive steps, not having the philosophy of leading by example can destroy a business from the inside out. It is imperative that if you want to succeed in today’s world, you must embrace this concept and incorporate it into the core of your business. When you are in a position of leadership, it is vital that your team members see that you are willing to roll up your sleeves and get your hands dirty. This will help to ensure that you are staying in touch with what their concerns are in the business. How many times have you heard on the news of leaders in a company that will make decisions that benefit themselves but put the workers at a disadvantage? Don’t let this become the culture in your company! When you look at many of these same companies, several of them are having financial difficulties Compare this to the companies that the leadership embraces what their workers need, and they are thriving. It is one team at the end of the day, the quicker you learn to lead through example, the faster results will be achieved.
One of the greatest benefits of leading through example is the fostering of teamwork. When you increase teamwork within your organization you can effectively give credit to where it is do. Do not be afraid of letting your team take the credit for the success in your business. When you show them how much you care about them and their success, the more they will take care of you and ensure that you are shining. One thing is for certain in business, when a leader takes care of their team, they will take care of them. This is because at some point in everyone’s career we have all had someone who did not do this and remember how it felt, as well as having a leader who did take care of us. I hope that you choose to be the latter of the two choices.
On the flip side where giving credit where credit is due, leaders must accept the responsibility of the failures when it is their fault instead of pointing the blame at another organization. When this is not done, it only prolongs taking action to create solutions for the failure. Look at the number of companies in the past year that have failed because the various leaders did not want to come to the table and agree to a solution that would save a company. If something is failing you must be willing to take drastic actions to turn things around before they become unrecoverable.
When you have effectively led by example, you will ultimately develop leaders within your organization who will carry your message and mission on to the masses. This is the ultimate result of leading effectively. Make it a point to identify who potential leaders are within your organization so you can be a great mentor to them so that they too may become effective leaders. When this is done over and over, organizations are able to grow while maintaining a high standard of integrity. Make the choice today and lead through example.
