Do you know someone that is a Social Media Chucklehead? I’m pretty certain that you do, as I can think of several people that I have encountered over the past few weeks that are deserving of this honor. Today I’m going to talk about some of the people who use Twitter who definitely fall into the category of being a Social Media Chucklehead! Over the past several days I’ve noticed a few trends, ok its been more than that but lets just call it a few days as things move very quickly in the world of social media right? Before going any further let me explain what a Chucklehead is. If you look in Merriam-Webster’s online dictionary the short definition of a chucklehead is a blockhead! The synonyms are not any nicer, actually they paint an even more colorful picture of what a Chucklehead is. So in regards to a Social Media Chucklehead, at best they are a blockhead, at worst use your imagination to define them.
Stuff That A Social Media Chucklehead Would Say!
You will find that a Social Media Chucklehead will say and do some pretty moronic things. Now let me clarify to avoid confusion amongst the masses. A Social Media Chucklehead intentionally is doing something moronic in the hopes that it will generate results. By no means am I referring to someone who is new to the world of Social Media. So here is a great lesson when it comes to learning how to use Social Media. If you see someone doing something that is pretty stupid and moronic, they are probably a Social Media Chucklehead so don’t repeat anything that they are doing. So lets get into some of the things that a Social Media Chucklehead would say.
On Twitter this is a quote of what someone said in a direct message after I followed them. “Thanks for following me, learn how to stop smoking today click (link) to find out more..” I have never smoked so why in the world would I need to learn how to stop smoking today… Chucklehead!
Also on Twitter someone I recently followed has the amazing urge to mention me in comments at least 10 times a day talking about great things that I should check out on their website.. #FAIL. Let me explain why, the goal of using twitter is to engage someone in conversation by sharing information, not spam them into submission. If you are doing this currently, please engage your audience so you don’t become a Social Media Chucklehead.
On Facebook, I’m sure you have seen someone do this by now, but do you know a person who has broken up with their significant other by changing their relationship status. They are the epitome of a Social Media Chucklehead! What has the world come to when someone can’t face a person and tell them its over, but have to let 5000 of their closest friends know their relationship is over and the victim finds out via a phone call from one of their mutual 5000 friends on Facebook. The goal of using social media is to take relationships offline to make things happen, learn how to pick up the phone, meet for coffee. You will be amazed at what can happen when you strengthen relationships.
And now for the Ultimate Social Media Chucklehead. People who try to sell you something the moment after they friend request you. Although now they are trying to sell you something before building a relationship. We live in a world where we do business with people we know like and trust. The times I have had bad experiences in business has been when I didn’t follow this rule. Follow it and you will avoid Chuckleheads in general.
The simple answer is don’t do any of the things I just mentioned. Seriously though, when using social media be authentic to who you are. Talk to people the way that you would want to be communicated with. The more we follow this simple rule, the fewer Chuckleheads there will be in the world! I would love it if you shared your favorite encounter with a Social Media Chucklehead in the comments below so we can all get a chuckle, and by all means share the message with your network by clicking the buttons below and to the left.
