Do you use social media mostly for keeping your friends and family up to date with the latest happenings in your world? Or are you using it to grow your business by reaching out to make new connections with people? This is one of the defining differences in what defines someone who is growing their business with their efforts versus those who dream about growing their business online. One factor that people tend to forget about when they start marketing their business online is how the plan integrates with their entire marketing plan! Yes, you absolutely must make sure that when you are marketing yourself online you are sending a consistent message across all media platforms. How many people have you seen do one thing in print, then another on social media, and say something else if they are in person. When you create a consistent message, people will begin to gravitate towards you.
To build a social media strategy that is effective there are a couple of key action steps that you must take which will simplify your efforts and increase your effectiveness.
1. Define Your Audience
This might sound like a no brainer, but so many people when it comes to marketing really have no idea who they are marketing to. You want to be as specific as possible. Lets take an industry such as Real Estate. There are plenty of agents out there who say they can help anyone, but really is that the case? If someone wants to focus on homes that range from $250+ is their ideal client someone who wants to only spend $80 on a home? Not really! Every demographic group likes to see messages a certain way, so the more specific you are in identifying who they are, the faster you will be able to connect with them and begin building relationships.
2. Build Your Community
Relationships are the key to building any business online or offline, and the best way to do this is to build a community. When you do this, you are accomplishing several things at once. First you are creating a group of like minded individuals that will share your thoughts and ideas about a particular topic or subject. Secondly, your community if built properly will become loyal raving fans. When you have a group of raving fans they will do everything they can to support you and refer you to their spheres of influence. Ask yourself, which is better, you spending your whole day trying to market to the masses, or having a group of people marketing to their spheres of influence to grow your business for you?
Just attracting people to follow you is not enough, you must engage your clients and customers where they are. How many times do you see brands only wanting to promote their product or service to an audience but never engage with them? It happens more than you think. Because of the way people communicate now with Social Media, people want to know that someone cares about them. To do this effectively you must create a plan that will allow you to effectively interact with the community that you are building. When this is done properly, your community will grow and take on a life of its own.
Remember that regardless of what the product or service that you are wanting to promote in today’s world, you absolutely must have a strategy to implement. Having a strategy will not only increase the results you are achieving, but it will simplify your efforts because your energy is directed towards specific results.
