Being an entrepreneur is similar to running a marathon. You have to be in it for the long haul to win. There will be ups and down, but when you cross the finish line, you will realize the journey was worth it.
One of the challenges many entrepreneurs face is staying motivated when things are not happening as quickly as they would like. It can be daunting to see someone else achieving results faster than you. However, we must keep in mind, that we don’t know their story, the road they have been on.
Because each of us is on a different road in life, the experiences we have will often shape the success we have and the speed in which we achieve them in. Another component to remember is timing. Sometimes success is determined by someone being in the right place at the right time. Think of times in your life when you felt “lucky” because things went your way.
The key to success is to remain determined in achieving the results you desire in business. The level of desire we have in life is directly linked to our why in life. This is why you will often see people create massive success when they are pushed into a corner. When someone is at this point they have nowhere else to go but forward. For example, think of Air BnB. The company got started because the founders needed a way to pay rent.
As your journey will be different than anyone else’s in life, you must know what your outcome is. The clearer your outcome, the easier it will be to stay motivated when times are tough. Have you taken the time to define how you will reward yourself when you achieve a set of goals? Creating rewards is one of the simplest ways to push through the hard times.
However, rewards are often not enough to push through the tough times. This is where your network of peers comes in. Think about the people you surround yourself with on a daily basis. Do they lift you up, or do they drag you down. We all have friends we can count on to help push us through when we need an extra boost. These are the individuals we must surround ourselves with consistently. It is the same reason why you see athletes, high achievers, etc surround themselves only with people who work as hard as they do to achieve a certain level of success. When you surround yourself with people with similar outcomes, you will find it easier to keep going as many times you will want to celebrate your successes together. What good does it do if you are not able to celebrate success with the people you care about?
While the above mentioned is vitally important to staying motivated, one ingredient that each and every one of us must have is mental fortitude. It is the one thing that is 100% internal. No one can tell you to stay motivated or do something for you to make it happen. It is completely up to you to make this happen. Every day you wake up with a choice. The choice is to either show up or not. If you show up, you are committing to being the best version of yourself to help the world around you. When you do the latter, you are holding back the gift you have. When you decide to not show up, remember that someone in the world will not benefit from you sharing your gift, and they might truly need you to be there on that day. This is why we must do everything we can to be the best version of ourselves each and every day to impact the world in a positive way with our gifts.
