Because of this it is important that business owners understand how to stand out in a crowded market because of the additional competiton. Long gone are the days of simply using a few simple ads stating that you were open for business. You have to think differently about reaching your target audience. So the simple answer to standing out in a crowded market is…. DON’T! Because of the sheer size of the marketplace, you can no longer be all things to all people. You have to focus in on dominating particular niches. Let’s look at a few examples. [Read more…]
Are you working to make a living, or building a business to allow you to live? That is a question most people have never thought about, as the answer to the question is quite different than you might suspect. When you are working to make a living, you are typically working for someone else to build their dreams and goals. When you build a business to allow you to live, you are creating a business that supports your lifestyle on your terms. In either situation, you are working the difference is are you building your dreams or someone else’s.
So Why Think Like A Business Owner
The moment that you decide to think like a business owner you begin to view things differently in life. While most people look at a problem as an inconvenience, a business owner may look at that problem as an opportunity to create a product or service to help someone. Everytime you see a new app released, or a business open in your local community its because someone noticed a problem and they came up with a solution to help solve it. Does that mean everyone will succeed? Of course not, that is an inherent risk associated with owning a business. But at the same time if you work for someone else there is no guarantee that you will work there for 5o years either. So you have to decide, do you want to put your future in your own hands or in the hands of someone else.
A big reason to think like a business owner is lifestyle. When you work for someone else, the income you earn will be limited by what they deem you to be worth. As a business owner, you decide what you are worth by what you are willing to do to earn it. Which of the two do you want to be at the end of the day? Regardless of your choice, the amount you earn will be based upon the value you provide to your clients & customers.
But by far the biggest reason to begin thinking like a business owner is to control your own destiny. Have you ever had dreams of doing something amazing in your life, but you were limited by the time you could take off from work? Or by the amount of income you earned. As a business owner you can create the income you need to accomplish it. The key is deciding what is it that you want and how badly you are willing to work to make it happen.
What are other ways that you can think like a business owner?
Every day there are countless entrepreneurs networking, and talking to people about their business. Among the most common questions that everyone asks someone is “What do you do for a living?” If you answer I’m a _____ helping people do ______ then you are not in the business you think you are in.
The reality is that in todays world while each of us has a speciality that we make a living by, we are all in the business of marketing. Think about it for a moment, those who market the best will typically earn the most. Notice I never mentioned that it had to be the greatest product or service in the world. If you have the worlds greatest product but no one knows about it, then what good is your product or service?
Every day, there are millions of people who are looking for solutions just like yours to help them with a problem. The question is, will they find you or will they find your competitor? Gone are the days of simply putting an ad in the yellow pages and waiting for the phone to ring. You have to have a strategy and be proactive about your marketing efforts if you are serious about generating leads for your business.
There are many great examples of how companies utilize various marketing strategies for their products & services. The one I want to focus on today that is the art of telling a story. While telling a story to market a product is nothing new, it moves faster than ever with social media.
Because of social media it is vital that any story that promotes our business is a positive one because regardless of if its positive or negative, it will be shared. This past weekend, I read a Facebook post that highlighted a picture in a local bar that tried to make humor of domestic violence in a very bad way. Sadly, the management of this establishment didn’t handle it well, so now their business is receiving tons of FREE publicity in a very negative way. Oh and the sign was written by the staff, not the management.
So if you think that only the people at the top in a business are in charge of marketing, try again. Marketing is the responsibility of everyone who is involved in the business.
Take a look at your marketing efforts. Is everyone on board with what you are doing, or is it only the people at the top. Remember marketing is a team effort.
How are you getting your team members involved in marketing?
As It’s Earth Day, It’s a beautiful day to celebrate what nature has to offer. It got me thinking about it’s origins and how it create a movement worldwide. As it was started as a way of honoring the Earth and the concept of peace in 1970, over 40 years later it is celebrated annually in countries globally.
When you look at your business, what are you doing to create a movement? Most businesses are focused on creating sales campaigns designed to generate revenue in the short term. While this is important, think for a moment what impact could you have in the world if you started a movement in your community that people can galvanize around?
So Why A Movement?
A movement ultimately brings people together for a common cause. Have you noticed how certain types of events in the community will bring people of all different backgrounds together, and others will drive them apart? You want to create an event that will focus on bringing people together.
When you create a movement, it puts you at the center of it! Think about it for a moment, if you were to create an event held annually that benefited the greater community where you live, what would the benefits be?
Obviously the cause you are creating the movement for will benefit, but also you and your business will be known for achieving something that is more altruistic than simply profit. Did you know that some people will do business with you simply because you care about something important to them?
How To Get Started?
Look in the mirror and ask yourself what are the causes that matter to you most in the community. Are there existing movements in your community that you can join, or do you need to start a brand new one? When you figure out which route to take, you have to create an event that will resonate with the community, and is manageable for you.
